SAFETY TIPS

The Sun

For 4 months of the year( june ,july ,august ,september) the sun and heat are particularly intense. Lay on sun screen and wear slippers as the sand cooks in the afternoon hours. Take dips in the beautiful waters of The Bay and drink plenty of water. If you bring an umbrella for shade, anchor it well with a rope and weight: usually brisk tradewinds.

Shorebreak

Be sure to check in with the lifeguards before entering the shorebreak. These near shore waves are super fun and relatively safe when small (3ft or less), but become exponentially more dangerous with size. 6 feet and up is for experts only with 2 body surfing fins.10 feet and up professionals only! The shorebreak is the sight of most rescues and injuries (i.e.: broken bones) at Waimea Bay.

Signs

The Lifeguards have a dozen or so different signs that can be posted in the sand indicating the day's conditions. They are placed as close as possible by the area with concern (i.e.: a strong current sign by a strong current ) and all together paint a picture of the more dangerous and more safe areas. The orange flags are meant merelly to draw your attention to the signs.

The Rip Current

A rip current is water flowing out to sea. It is caused by incoming ocean waves and the larger the surf the stronger the current. 95% of the time at Waimea, the surf generated current flows out and to the left toward the rocks. If cought by a powerful rip, DON'T PANIC! Keep in mind that the waves are pushing toward shore so use this fact to your advantage and let the waves help as you make your way back in.If you're hesitant , perhaps due the large waves, call on a bodysurfer or a bodyboarder nearby and they will gladly give you some tips. A 3rd opition at Waimea Bay is to swim out to deep water in the middle of The Bay and relax. Someone will spot you and come to assist.

The River

The river and river riding is a unique phenomena at Waimea Bay. The popular wave riding machines of today have all been inspired by this one. It's created by the fresh or brachish water of Waimea River flowing into the ocean.Strickly a winter activity (surf and rain required) it's for EXPERTS ONLY :Crazy currents and debris. It's amazing to watch and if you're doing so, Please stand back! The soft sand banks are constantly caving in.

The Jump Rock

A very popular activity at Waimea Bay , Exclusivelly in summer, but never recommended due the injuries .If you decide to jump , first check the water depth (usually 8-10 feet) and look for other first ! At highest point the Jump Rock is 24 feet high.

Theft Problems

Keep an eye on your bags! Waimea Bay is a very popular beach and unfortunately atracts thieves. The "professionals" tend to work the parking lot and can have a locked car open in 10 seconds! The "on the beach " thieves are mostly teen punks, opportunists who grab unattended bags and sometimes use switch and diversion tactics. The left corner by Jump Rock ir the worst area with hiding places and multiple scape roots. Enjoy but be alert!
